If you feel like every state has a Greenville, that’s because most do. There are 36 in the U. With a walkable city center, fabulous food offerings and abundant natural beauty, this is the little city that could. Greenville’s home turf is best known as the Upcountry, but the Cherokee version—the Great Blue Hills of God—is what really tips you off to the kind of terrain you’ll find here: a vast expanse of river- and cascade-laced mountains.
And while the foothills are gorgeous year-round, they turn jaw-dropping in spring, as dogwoods and azaleas get the blossom party started. To see for yourself, check out the three state parks around Greenville.

This is a love song. This is a love song about two local high school sweethearts who went to prom together, married, and had children. But along the way, they drifted apart. Music eventually lifted them out of the pit, and they came together to tell their authentic love story through song. Out of that fog came their emergence as a folk duo who played at Roots N Blues for the first time this year, singing harmonies about finding the strength to heal and love.
Kristen recalls that time period with very sweet memories. We both have a deep love for music and performing. Nine months after they married, they found out they were expecting their first child. Andrew was still finishing his undergraduate degree, and their first child, Rae, came to his graduation. Their marriage began to strain under the weight of differing expectations and the responsibilities of being young parents.
At the same time, the couple worked together leading worship and writing songs at a local church.

The Chapel Hill duo led by married couple Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz, both 31, plays soothing, meditative and disarmingly frank folk songs.
The North Carolina duo have built a steady and growing fanbase with this kind of intimacy, and on Tides of A Teardrop , due out February 1, it is more potent than ever. You can hear the air between them—the taut space of shared understanding, as palpable as a magnetic field, that makes their music sound like two halves of an endlessly completing thought. Singer-songwriter Andrew Marlin and multi-instrumentalist Emily Frantz have honed this lamp glow intimacy for years.
On Tides of A Teardrop , Marlin wrote the songs, as he usually does, in a sort of stream of consciousness, allowing words and phrases to pour out of him as he hunted for the chords and melodies. Then, as he went back to sharpen what he found, he found something troubling and profound. Intimations of loss have always haunted the edges of their music, their lyrics hinting at impermanence and passing of time.

When progressive folk act Elephant Revival announced it was taking an indefinite hiatus last year, fans were shocked. The Nederland-born band was to play one last show at Red Rocks, and then the band members would go their separate ways. The group—known for employing lush harmonies, a washboard, and sometimes, interpretive dancers to round out its live shows—was a pioneer and mainstay of the Colorado music scene.
For guitarist Daniel Rodriguez, the news was upsetting for personal reasons: It marked the end of his year relationship with his bandmate, multi-instrumentalist Bonnie Paine. For Rodriguez, the hiatus that followed the breakup has meant adopting the lifestyle of a solo musician.

Today, the dialogue continues with an upcoming five-song EP, out February 7th, to be preceded by three singles and supported by a six-week tour. Dead Horses weave together a patchwork of classic and contemporary influences that span trad roots, indie-folk, and other experimental musical idioms. In its artistic continuum, Dead Horses has explored freeform musicality and thoroughly composed approaches. Thematically, the songs are personal, revelatory, and relatable, brimming with imaginative phrases, poetry, vulnerability, and a feeling of redemption.
Dead Horses is something of a fluid project centered around Sarah and Dan but throughout the years has welcomed other like-minded musicians for recording and touring. The band’s name is a loving tribute to a former friend of the band who passed away due to struggles with opioid abuse. Sarah and Dan met during post-college crossroads moments. Initially, the two resided in different musical spheres. Sarah was coming from a singer-songwriter vantage point; Dan had previously played in punk bands; but the two bonded over folk music and a shared upbringing in the church.
During those formative times, Sarah showed Dan songs she had been writing since high school. Inspired by her catalog of music, Dan decided to take on a new instrument, the upright bass, and set out to explore its melodic possibilities.
